MARGAO: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) spokesman Reginaldo Lourenco has sought the intervention of the government and the legislators to save Goan families from being uprooted from their land at Teracol to make way for a starred resort.
Addressing the media, Reginaldo said though the Goans families had acquired tenancy rights around 17 years ago, they now face displacement because of the indifference of the BJP government.
“The ancestors of these Goans families had settled at Teracol with small fishing canoes for their livelihood and existence. In fact, they settled there to safeguard even the state borders. They worked hard on the agricultural land, but they now faces displacement because of the 200 room hotel project coming on the Goa-Maharashtra border”, he said.
Reginaldo feared that if the rights of the tenants are not protected as per the law, the very fate of the Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act hangs in balance.
“This Act was enacted so that the common man enjoys the fruits,” he said, and lashed out at the Parrikar regime for doing nothing to save these Goan families from displacement.
Replying to a question, Reginaldo said the beleaguered residents had even voted for the BJP in the last election after the Party promised to solve their issue if returned to power, adding that the very existence of the residents is threatened by government inaction.
The CLP spokesman said the issue pertaining to the Teracol residents is a typical case of corruption during the Parrikar regime, adding that the BJP has only fooled the Goans with false promises and hopes during the polls.
