Registration Bill of 2008 withdrawn
HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, JULY 23
Speaker Pratapsing Rane granted leave to withdraw the Registration (Goa Amendment) Bill, 2008, in the Monsoon Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
The Bill was passed more than two years back to restrict foreigners from buying land in Goa. It had raised eyebrows after it was passed in the Assembly. It may be recalled Dayanand Narvekar, who was then Law Minister, had asserted the bill meant to “ban” foreigners from buying properties in the State didn’t mention anywhere its intentions of banning foreigners from buying land. He had maintained there was no mention of foreigners in the bill.
Since it was a Central Act, the Union Home Ministry didn’t agree to the amendment.
