PORVORIM: Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar launched the garbage vans purchased by Reis-Magos panchayat for garbage collection on daily basis.
On the occasion, the minister said that out of six panchayats in Saligao constituency, Saligao, Sangolda and Guirim have already received the garbage vans and the remaining two — Pilerne and Nerul – would get them shortly.
The carrying capacity of the garbage van is three tons and three trips will be needed to clear the entire garbage of Reis Magos.
If the Garbage Corporation comes into existence then this work of collection of garbage would be taken over by the said corporation.
The panchayats who are collecting the garbage on daily basis using their garbage vehicles will be suitably compensated by the Garbage Corporation, said Parulekar.
Sarpanch Kedar Naik said that the cost of each garbage van is Rs 9 lakh and they have purchased the same through panchayat funds.
“Presently the garbage is collected once a week, but from known on it will now be collected on daily basis. The panchayat proposes to start door-to-door collection after three months,” Naik said.
