MARGAO: Leader of the Opposition, Yuri Alemao, has called upon the people of Canacona to oppose the proposed Film City project slated for the eco-sensitive Bhagwati plateau in Loliem. In a plea to safeguard the future of Canacona, Alemao emphasised the responsibility of residents to prevent potential disaster by opposing the project.
Alemao made these remarks during a Congress workers’ meeting in Canacona, attended by prominent figures including Congress Party-nominated candidate for South Goa Capt Viriato Fernandes, Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa, South Goa District Congress President Savio D’Silva, Canacona Block Congress President Abel Borges, and others.
Viriato Fernandes echoed concerns about the impending hardships faced by communities along the 105-kilometer coastline under the jurisdiction of the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA). “I will take up the issue to free the entire coastline from the jurisdiction of MPA and give relief to Goans. Canacona’s fisher community as well as all those staying in the coastal belt will be benefitted,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa accused the BJP Government of pursuing land acquisition schemes to benefit land and real estate interests.
D’Costa urged Canconkars to unite against the film city project, echoing the spirit of resistance displayed by the protesting farmers in Shel Melauli, Sattari.
Savio D’Silva, South Goa District Congress President, urged party workers to engage with every Canconkar and garner support for Fernandes in the upcoming elections.
