PANJIM: Showing no signs of relenting, heavy rains continued to batter the State by wreaking havoc and throwing normal life out of gear on Sunday.
The heavy rains accompanied by strong and gusty winds caused flooding in several low lying areas across the State with reports of landslides at few places.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel at Panjim, who were kept busy, said they received a total of 27 emergency calls on Sunday. Of these 27 calls, 21 were related to crashing of trees on roads while two were related to wall collapse.
According to IMD Goa, with the depression over South Konkan moving away from Goa into South Madhya Maharashtra in the morning, the IMD downgraded the red warning to orange for the State.
Goa received heavy spell of rainfall on Saturday as the result of this depression, which was passing from the sea between Ratnagiri and Goa into Maharashtra towards Kolhapur. Several minor landslides, collapse of retaining walls, flooding roads, uprooting of trees were reported in the last 24 hours due to incessant rain for the last few days.
“Depression over south Konkan weakened into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over south Madhya Maharashtra and neighbourhood. The depression over south Konkan moved north-eastwards and weakened into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over south Madhya Maharashtra & neighbourhood at 08.30 hours IST of today, October 1, 2023. It is very likely to move further north-eastwards and weaken into a Low Pressure Area during next 12 hours,” the IMD Goa said.
According to IMD, Altinho, Mapusa received 3.1 inches of rainfall, Pernem 3.1 inches, Ponda 2.9 inches, Panjim 1.8 inches, Old Goa 2.4 inches, Sankhali 3.5 inches, Canacona 1.7 inches, Dabolim 1.1 inches, Margao 1.5 inches, Mormugao 1.5 inches, Quepem 2.3 inches and Sanguem 2.8 inches of rainfall during the last 24 hours reported at 8.30 am on October 1.
