PANJIM: In order to avoid congestion while transporting iron ore, the State government has decided to install twice the number of weighing bridges at ore loading sites compared to those at the unloading point.
“It has been decided to explore the possibility on trial basis of allowing up to twice the number of weighbridges for loading ore at source than that are available at unloading points or destination point, so that there could be efficient transportation of mineral without congesting transportation routes used by general public,” the order issued by director Mines Prasanna Acharya states. The new system has been in place from April 1.
The decision was taken after DMG observed that, where more weighbridges are used for loading of minerals at source than those used for capturing the unloaded weight of the carrier at destination point at jetty or storage points there is unwarranted congestion or occupation of road by the ore carrier vehicles. “Because of this, the general public who are also using such transportation routes are put to inconvenience,” Acharya said.
The Director said that at present the movement of iron ore laden vehicles is monitored by the department by using Global Positioning System (GPS).
“The department has taken various steps to reduce pressure on National Highways, State Highway, major district roads, etc by taking various measures including increasing the transportation timing from earlier 6.0O am to 6.00pm and making it from 6.00am to 10 pm,” he said.
Currently, government is facing severe protests in various villages within the mining talukas due to the transportation of ore, which has commenced based on Supreme Court directives.
