VASCO: Stating that the demolition of the remaining eight huts at Baina beach would be carried out on Monday morning, South Goa Collector Venancio Furtado on Saturday added that notices will also be served on other illegal structures and residents would be asked to evacuate from those areas endangered by soil erosion.
Furtado announced this at a meeting with the agencies involved in the evacuation of the migrants from the 74 huts which had come up within the high tide zone at Baina beach.
During the meeting, Furtado delegated duties to different agencies and decided to evacuate the migrants and remove the huts on Monday at 7 am.
Sources at the meeting informed Herald that Furtado directed the police to be present at the site by 6 am and asked the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to clear the debris.
Later speaking to Herald, Furtado stated that the disaster management team would evacuate the remaining migrants from the eight huts and later remove the huts on Monday morning at around 7 am.
Meanwhile, some migrants were seen demolishing their own huts and taking the material in pickups to an alternate site.
It may be recalled that that the demolition drive was in progress on July 11, when an aggrieved resident, Yemnappa Lamani, appealed before the High Court and obtained a stay on the demolition of eight structures.
Meanwhile, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah told media persons in Bangalore that he would write to Chief Minister Manohar Parikkar, requesting him to initiate measures to protect the interests of Kannada-speaking people in Goa, who were recently evicted from their huts.
