PONDA: The remains of the old Portuguese era bridge at Borim were finally cleared from the Zuari river.  PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral yesterday inspected the site and said that the government had cleared the remains of the old Borim bridge which posed a risk to water navigation and other activities.

“Since the bridge was of historical importance, it’s  approach road ramp structure site on Zuari river bank will be preserved. It is the property of the PWD now,” said the Minister.

He recalled the bridge was bombarded by the Portuguese during Goa Liberation and the  Indian Government repaired it in 1963. “It collapsed later and there after the government constructed a new bridge 1986 but the old remains posed a risk to barges and other activities and nobody made an attempt to clear it.  It was in river for long time and finally today government cleared it,” said the Minister.

He also said that two labourers had died while clearing the old bridge structure and regretted the incident.
