MARGAO: Upon the directions from the Bombay High Court at Goa pertaining to Sonsoddo legacy dump, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has decided to re-start the remediation work of the legacy dump in the first or second week of October.
On Tuesday, an important meeting between the GWMC and Margao Municipal Council was held in Panjim, which was also attended by the concerned contractor.
Lavinson Martins, Managing Director, GWMC told Herald that both the authorities, besides the concerned contractor have decided to commence the work pertaining to bio-remediation within the next couple of days
“Most probably bioremediation work of the legacy dump will commence from the first or second week of October, provided rains stop, and target will be completed at the earliest,” he informed.
It is pertinent to note that the High Court, upon the petition filed by Citizens for Sonsodo had directed the GWMC and MMC to take necessary action so that the legacy waste is cleared by February 2023. The High Court had also asked the authorities to prepare a plan in order to remediate the legacy waste.
At the meeting called by the GWMC, officials deliberated in detail on the issue, including the directions given by the High Court. Authorities have also taken the concerned contractor into confidence so that the remediation at the Sonsoddo is expedited once started.
Presently, it has been revealed that the situation at the Sonsoddo dump yard is very pathetic and the waste generated on a daily basis is leading to more trouble for the civic body. There is hardly any excess even for the waste-carrying trucks to move inside.
Officials of the Margao municipality are of the opinion that the legacy waste over here is in lakh cubic metres.
“We will try to remediate the legacy waste, which is huge in quantity at the earliest. The contractor was forced to stop the remediation work due to the rains and now we hope that dry spell is witnessed in order to expedite the work,” Martins said.
Sources informed Herald that the civic body is facing a tough time due to the refuse derived fuel (RDF) from Sonsoddo. RDF at the site has turned out to be another hill. Even the shed meant for this particular work is full of RDF.
