PANJIM: The North Goa Rent-a-Cab Taxi Association has threatened to intensify its stir after some tourists were subjected to inconvenience when Calangute police intercepted and attached five rent-a-cabs on Thursday.
The association members walked to the police station and later to the assistant directorate of Transport seeking an explanation on the alleged harassment.
“Some tourists were taken to the police station along with the rent-a-cabs. They were driving while the rest were left on the roadside without any vehicle. This is harassment not only to rent-a-cab operators but tourists too,” association spokesperson Rohan Kalangutkar said.
The vehicles were nonetheless released thereafter. The crackdown on the rent-a-cabs has angered the association members who have threatened to intensify their stir against the authorities demanding regularisation of permits.
“If the government and the local MLA (Michael Lobo) claim that we are illegally running the business then yes, we are doing so. The reason is precisely because the government is not granting us the licence despite everything being in place. This is the only source of income for our families,” he said.
