PANJIM: The State government on Thursday asked rent-a-cab and taxi operators to install speed governors before April 7, 2024 or else their licences will be cancelled.
Speaking to reporters, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said, “From today they are being given time of one month. You must have speed governors which work. If you had installed the speed governors in the past but they are not working, this will not be accepted. After the end of one month from today, there will be strict enforcement. There will be impounding of vehicles and cancellation of permits, if the vehicles are found involved in serious violation of laws.”
However, the minister conceded that enough speed governors are not available in the market and dealers over exploit the customers and charge up to Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 for a device which is available for around Rs 2,000.
He said the vehicle owners will be given the liberty to procure the device from any dealer of their choice, including those outside the State.
