Rent-a-car flips on steep Mapausa-Siolim slope; Poor lighting blamed

MAPUSA: The driver of a rent-a-car hired by tourists lost control on the steep Mapusa-Siolim slope and overturned after colliding with the embankment. The tourists, hailing from Bengaluru, emerged unharmed, but the mishap has sparked concerns about safety of the road in the area.

The incident occurred when the rented vehicle, driven by one of the tourists, encountered difficulties navigating the challenging terrain, exacerbated by poor lighting along the route. As a result, the car veered off course, striking the embankment and flipping over.

Expressing their ordeal, the tourists blamed the inadequate lighting along the Mapusa-Siolim road as a cause of the accident. Local authorities and passers-by helped the occupants to get out of the car.

Locals have expressed concerns about the safety of this road, noting a higher frequency of accidents due to several factors. One issue is the absence of proper signage and speed limit boards. This is hazardous to drivers who are not familiar with the terrain.

Additionally, the lack of street lighting exacerbates the situation, making it challenging for travellers to navigate safely, especially during nighttime. Residents have urged the authorities to address these concerns promptly to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
