PANJIM: With the people facing hardship due to the pothole-ridden roads, the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has threatened to block major roads if government fails to repair the pothole-ridden roads.
The party has also taken a dig at government’s assurance in the Goa Legislative Assembly that the State roads would be pothole-free before Ganesh Chaturthi.
“The Chief Minister had made a statement in the Goa Legislative Assembly that potholes would be repaired before Ganesh Chaturthi but the problem continues till date. The government is insensitive to the problems the people are going through. If the potholes are not repaired at the earliest, we will be forced to block main roads in protest to government’s negligent attitude,” GPCC president Girish Chodankar informed reporters on the sidelines of a press conference in the capital city on Sunday.
In separate accidents, the State has recorded deaths of two motorists while trying to avoid potholes. Public Works Minister Deepak Pauskar has given another deadline of eight days to repair the potholes.
Chodankar alleged that government has wasted Rs 6,000 crore spent in a joint collaborate by the Central and State government to construct highways and roads, in the last five years. “I have written to the Chief Minister about the wastage of funds. In a small State like Goa such a huge amount is being spent and the result is also poor. The roads are in bad shape,” he claimed and demanded that government should ensure that roads are properly maintained by the contractor.
On the issue of casinos, the party has yet again reiterated that government has failed to act against the illegal operations of the offshore casinos in River Mandovi.
