MAYEM: Claiming to have faced heavy losses as their vegetable farms have been destroyed due to water leakages at the Tillari canal for the second time this season, farmers from Bordem-Bicholim have appealed to the State government repair the Tillari canal at the earliest.
The farmers complained that water from the Tillari canal, which passes though Lakherem in Bordem-Bicholim seeps and gets accumulated in a well in the middle of the field. Water then overflows and enters the fields, thereby destroying the plantation, they said.
“During this season, we had taken pains to grow our seasonal crops, which include chillies, chick peas, brinjals and onions, but all our efforts have been wasted, as Tillari canal water entered our fields,” complained a farmer, Ratnakar Pal.
Another farmer, Surya Pal, said: “About 40 farmers produces different seasonal crops every year and earn their livelihood. But this time, we are in total loss.”
“We would like to ask the government this question: how are we expected to undertake farming activity when such destruction takes place every year?”
