Repair work on Margao home for the aged to begin by March end; State govt tells High Court

AG submits affidavit on behalf of GSIDC; states that all efforts will be made to complete works by December 2025

PANJIM: The State government gave an assurance to the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court (HC) that work on repairing the old age Home in Margao, which is the Institute of Public Assistance (IPA) Provedoria Margao will commence before April 2024.

The assurance was given in connection with the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that the HC was hearing regarding the concerns raised over the issue of providing proper old age homes to senior citizens and matters connected to that. The PIL was focusing on the repair of the Old Age home in Margao.

Advocate General Devidas Pangam submitted an affidavit on behalf of GSIDC stating that all efforts would be made to commence the works by end of March 2024 and complete the said works by December 2025.

The HC observed that the code of conduct would not come in the way of the tendering and completion of works.

“The petition also concerns the effective implementation of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. Accordingly, even if the Code of Conduct sets in, there should be no difficulty for the tender processes and the issuance of work orders,” said the HC bench.

The HC then adjourned the matter for the next hearing on April 15, 2024 and asked GSIDC to file a status report before it by April 12, 2024.
