PANJIM: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has decided to petition Goa Governor B V Wanchoo with a demand to re-schedule the five-day Budget Session of the State Legislative Assembly, from March 3 to 7, as it coincides with the annual Carnival festival and Ash Wednesday, which are scheduled in the first week of March.
The Party is also due to urge the Governor to ask Legislative Speaker Rajendra Arlekar to step aside, in connection with the case filed with the Anti-Corruption Bureau regarding purchase of 500sq mtrs plot at Porvorim for a whopping Rs 75 lakh till the time he is proven innocent.
Speaking to media persons, NCP spokesperson Trajano D’Mello said that Government should re-schedule the assembly session as it coincides with the Carnival festival (to be held on March 1, 2, 3 and 4) and the holy Wednesday (March 5).  “The session should be either in the last week of February or second week of March,” he said.
Further, Trajano said that Arlekar should not be allowed to chair the forthcoming session for being charged of corruption. “In order to have fair investigation, Speaker needs to step down from the post till he is proven innocent,” he added.
D’Mello also said that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar should give away his Home portfolio for being indicated by the local court in a case related to death of Central jail inmate Mahadev Gaonkar. Court has asked that an FIR be filed against Chief Minister in the case.
