CANACONA: After Liberation, a primary health centre(PHC) was soon started in a Portuguese-era building in Canacona. Residential quarters were built for the staff of the PHC next to PHCbuilding. However now the building is in a dilapidated state. PWD had repaired these quarters almost 20 years ago and around 12 of these quarters now lie abandoned.
Diago D, Silva, chairman of CanaconaArogyaSevaSamiti, had written to the Directorate of Health to demolish these buildings and build new quarters for the now upgraded Community Health Centre(CHC)staff to stay.
The health centre which was run in an old, pre-Liberation building soon proved insufficient as the population of the taluka increased rapidly. The then Canacona MLA Vijay PaiKhot sent a proposal to the former chief minister late ManoharParrikar asking for a new building and upgradation of the PHC to community health centre (CHC).
“Now, Canacona has a well-equipped community health centre while the old health centre building stands as a reminder of the past. This building can be repaired and a health-related section can be started here,” said Shreesthal panchayat’s former deputy sarpanchKisanNaik.
He also questioned the practical usability of the community health centre as it lacks specialty doctors.
