CANACONA: Decrying government inaction, residents in Canacona were virtually at a loss of words to describe their disgust at the increasing number of fatal mishaps along the Balli-Canacona NH-17 stretch.
The residents together with politicians have upped the ante for their demand for immediate widening of the NH-17 stretch from Polem-Canacona to Balli with a divider and forceful imposition of a sense of ‘driving discipline’ especially for the inter-state heavy vehicles on the Karmal ghat section.
“The number of people died on the stretch due to innumerable mishaps which occurred due to rash, negligent and recklessly driven inter-state heavy vehicles will be difficult to account for and what people of Canacona feel is that every subsequent government wants us to keep counting and forget the loss of valuable lives,” said agitated Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Madhav Dessai.
“Subsequent governments are careless in improving highway roads, even as there is manifold increase in vehicles ever since the road was constructed during the pre-liberation era,” he said.
“Instead of giving lip service by way of engaging insignificant road widening works, why is there no divider on the Karmal ghat,”
he questioned.
