Residents fume over destruction of sand dunes at Benaulim Beach

Demand immediate restoration; call for stern action against the culprits

MARGAO:  Shocked after noticing the destruction of several sand dunes at the Benaulim Beach, residents on Monday demanded that the sand dunes be restored immediately and stern action be taken against the culprits.

This is yet another such incident of destruction of sand dunes in recent times as a similar incident was reported at Varca too.

Residents complained that a large portion of sand dunes here has been completely destroyed and suspect that it is due to commercial activities.

It is pertinent to note that Varca locals too had expressed their ire over the destruction of sand dunes at the beach; however, it was later restored followed by police complaint.

Rudolf Fernandes, a resident of Benaulim told reporters that they suddenly noticed machinery engaged in destruction of sand dunes at Benaulim beach. However, by the time they reached the site, a major portion of the sand dunes was destroyed.

“We are shocked to see the destruction of sand dunes, which are immediate protection against the possible tsunami or rise in sea water levels. It seems that nobody is bothered about the damage caused to the environment due to destruction of the sand dunes,” he said.

He said that those involved in the destruction of the sand dunes have no concern towards the fishing community.

“In the past we have seen government authorities stopping any activity by the fishermen in the beach area, but no one is bothered to stop the destruction of the sand dunes,” said Fernandes.

He informed that an oral complaint has been filed with the Colva Police Station and South Goa Collector’s office demanding immediate action and measures to restore the sand dunes.

Fernandes urged the CRZ to take serious note of the incident and initiate action.

Another local said that this destruction of sand dunes will also affect farming activities, wherein those involved, have even filled the drainage constructed to prevent destruction to farming activities in the nearby area due to entry of saline water.

“Destruction of sand dunes will have a major impact on the people and fishing community residing in the area,” he added.
