CANACONA: In view of the COVID-19 threat perception and Janata curfew announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, the entire Canacona taluka went into lockdown mode as people latched their homes from inside and stayed indoors literally from Saturday 9 pm to Sunday 9 pm.

Most of the shops, restaurants, liquor outlets and all other business activities excluding a minuscule number took a break for the day in view of the call given by Modi.

As Karnataka border police at Mazali enforced the Janata curfew strictly; no vehicle was allowed to pass through the Karnataka border into Goa except vehicles carrying essential goods and sick persons.

The same was true at Polem check post which is being manned by extra police personnel including the Canacona police inspector since Saturday evening.

“We allowed vehicles carrying essential commodities and sick people to go across the Polem border, also the Janata Curfew was totally successful in the taluka as everyone stayed indoors,” Canacona PI Tukaram Chavan said.

Also as per the order from the South Goa administration all the road side eateries are closed till March 31, Chavan informed.

All the buses plying through Canacona stopped their operations for entire Sunday as the KTC bus stand wore a deserted look, so also all the shops at Chaudi which is the administrative headquarters of the taluka remained shut during the whole day.

Meanwhile, hundreds of foreign and domestic tourists stuck up in the taluka for various reasons, stayed indoors as the famous beaches in the taluka wore a total deserted look.

“People of Canacona on their own responded positively to the call given by the prime minister, by staying indoors and we have to thank the people of Canacona for being so cooperative and observing the Janata curfew most peacefully,” Deputy Collector Pritidas Gaonkar said.

Local MLA and Deputy Speaker Isidore Fernandes complimented and appreciated the people of Canacona for staying indoors.

Speaking to Herald he said that he is concerned about the threat due to COVID-19 and through his channels he made all efforts to see that everyone stayed indoors.

“I wish and pray that humankind comes victorious in this hour of crisis which has affected the entire world in the form of COVID-19,” Fernandes mentioned.
