Residents of Khola, Agonda demand fish market at Saleri

Fishermen’s lives at stake; locals push for market construction as roadside sales cause traffic chaos

AGONDA: The residents of Khola and Agonda have demanded a fish market at Saleri in Khola panchayat area, as the fishermen are risking their lives to sell fish along the narrow main road near the Saleri river bridge, causing disruptions to traffic flow.

Concerned locals have submitted a memorandum to Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar and MLA Elton D’Costa, seeking the safety of fish vendors. In response, MLA Elton D’Costa conducted a site inspection, as reported by social activist Sunil Pagi.

It is crucial to highlight that the primary road becomes narrow in the vicinity of the Saleri river bridge. Fish sellers occupying both sides not only jeopardize their own safety but also contribute to the daily traffic congestion. Ramas Bhushir, a prominent location, is only a few blocks away from this area, posing a hazard to commuters. While a shed has been erected on the banks of the Saleri river for fishermen to mend their nets, the locals argue that the demand for a market’s construction is still being neglected by the elected representatives.

The establishment of a fish market is deemed essential not only for the safety of fish vendors but also for the well-being of citizens using this road. Realising the seriousness of the demand, Canacona police issued a warning to the Cola panchayat, emphasising that they would be held responsible in the event of any untoward incident or major tragedy.

Social activist Sunil Pagi highlighted that women selling fish in the area are doing so out of compulsion due to the lack of alternatives. Pagi suggested a temporary solution by widening the road by 5 meters on each side to accommodate the fish sellers until a proper market is constructed. Pagi claimed that the government-owned roadside property should be utilised for this purpose.

Despite assurances from the local MLA to raise the matter with PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral, no resolution has been reached to date, according to Pagi.
