Residents on edge due to leopard sightings in Pernem: Mandrem MLA

PORVORIM: Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar on Tuesday raised the issue of leopard sightings in Pernem taluka.

Raising the matter during Zero Hour in the Legislative Assembly, Arolkar said, “There is fear and anxiety in the minds of the people due to the alarming rise in leopards being seen in human habitats. It is known to everybody that they are entering cities and villages. They have started eating dogs and other animals. Those days are not far when they will attack human beings also.”

“The government should take note of it, else we will have to quit having dogs as pets and will have tigers instead. We should be told what to have as pets,” he said.

In May this year, residents of Pernem Taluka were on edge as sightings of leopards roaming the area had become increasingly frequent.

Reports had surfaced of the big cats preying on dogs and cows, raising concerns among locals about their safety and the safety of their livestock, the Mandrem MLA said.
