MARGAO: Residents of Carmona have demanded that the PWD restore the Gavona Pond in their village.
It may be recalled that, after PWD officials visited the site and interacted with the villagers, the locals had given the officials a week to fulfill their demands, failing which they would come onto the streets.
Recently, PWD officials, led by the Assistant Engineer R S Godi, had carried out an inspection of the lake as some minor work was underway. The work was suspended after strong objection from the villagers, while the Carmona comunidade had alleged that the work was being carried out without an NOC.
A large number of villagers gathered during the inspection and questioned the PWD officials over the rationale in using concrete and cement to build up the banks of the pond, while the panchayat had proposed fortifying of the banks with stones, besides construction of concrete steps to the pond.
The farmers alleged that the work was being done without obtaining NOCs from them, and adding that the department had left debris in the field, which were now at risk of being destroyed.
Godi had assured the villagers that the matter would be put before the executive engineer, following which action would be initiated.
