Restrict fish export, says St Cruz MLA

The MLA charged that the fish exported from Goa is imported back into the State, with chemicals.

PORVORIM: Congress MLA Rudolfo Fernandes has urged the government to monitor and impose restrictions on the export of fish from the State to ensure that the commodity is available to locals at affordable prices.

The MLA charged that the fish exported from Goa is imported back into the State, with chemicals. He said litmus papers should be readily available so that the consumers can test their fish for additives.

A total 36,057 tonnes of fish estimated at Rs 73 crore was exported from Goa for the financial year 2021-22, as per government records. 

Fisheries Minister Nilkant Halarnkar said that  exports are not directly monitored by the State 

government, but are monitored by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), 

Mangalore, Karnataka functioning under the Department of Commerce.
