VASCO: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Wednesday launched the works of constructing a retaining wall and rock bouldering in wards V and VI of Mormugao Municipal Council to arrest landslides occurring during monsoon.

The project amounting to Rs 3 crore is undertaken through the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA).

Speaking on the occasion, Amonkar said that every year several houses in the Bogda area were receiving notices of evacuation claiming that there is a danger of landslide and the people always live in fear.

He said that after he became MLA, he raised the issue in the Assembly and for the first time, these houses received evacuation notices. Since then he had planned to construct a retaining wall in the area to prevent recurrence of landslides.

Amonkar said that he has appointed local residents to supervise the ongoing works by the contractor and to ensure that the works are completed in quick time.
