PANJIM: Retired judge of Bombay High Court Dr Gustavo Felipe Couto passed away on Friday after a brief illness. He was 93.
Dr Couto was the first Goan judge to be elevated as a Judge of the Bombay High Court when the Bombay High Court jurisdiction was extended to Goa and was also the Administrative Judge of the Bench.
After Liberation, Justice Couto served as Senior Division Judge at several courts across Goa and then as Additional District and Sessions Judge and subsequently as District and Sessions Judge of Goa, Daman and Diu.
He then headed the Judiciary in Goa from 1981 as Judicial Commissioner of Goa, Daman and Diu and was the last Judicial Commissioner of Goa.
