Retired headmistress is Cuncolim’s first COVID victim

Meena, wife of former SP Tony Fernandes passed away even as husband battles COVID in the same hospital; Both were found COVID positive simultaneously and moved to hospital within hours of each other

CUNCOLIM: Former vice chairperson of the Cuncolim Municipal Council  and retired headmistress Meena Fernandes succumbed to COVID on Monday, making it the first death from Cuncolim.

She was the wife of former SP Tony Fernandes, who too is battling COVID in hospital.

 She along with her husband Tony Fernandes were admitted to COVID Hospital after detected COVID positive. Sources at the COVID Hospital informed that she had problems like hyper tension and pneumonia.

Her funeral rites were held at Cuncolim cemetery. Cuncolim Church authorities made provision for the funeral.

Former SP Tony was also tested positive along with Meena and two other family members four days ago. The couple had initially asked for home isolation. However, on the same day Tony complained of breathing difficulties and was shifted to the COVID Hospital.

Unfortunately, a few hours later his wife Meena Fernandes also found it difficult to breathe and too was shifted to the COVID Hospital.

Sources from the hospital informed that on that day their oxygen levels were low and both were on ventilator. However, Meena Fernandes succumbed. 

Tony Fernandes is in the ICU with complications problems high blood pressure. He is also a diabetic.

Meanwhile, COVID cases are increasing in Cuncolim. The virus has spread to almost all twelve wards of Cuncolim Municipal Council. It first entered the Cuncolim Industrial estate and then cases surfaced at the Cuncolim Municipal Council office.

 Incidentally, a local councillor has filed an appeal at High Court against the State Government for not taking precautionary measures to control COVID.
