MARGAO: Former Minister Ramesh Tawadkar on Saturday clarified that he returned to the Bharatiya Janata Party to carry on with his social work and asserted that he was not made any promises to return to the party.
Non-committal on the current political developments, Tawadkar pointed out that it was he who welcomed Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes in the party first.
When asked if there would be three claimants for the BJP ticket in the next assembly elections, which include two ex-MLAs and the present MLA, he said, “No more the merrier.”
However, he asserted that he was not promised the BJP ticket when he returned to the party after having quit in 2017 to contest as an Independent. “I and my workers disagreed with certain decisions the party took in 2017 and therefore I had quit the BJP to prove our point,” he said.
However, he admitted that he needed the party to carry on with his social activities and hence returned to the party only for the sake of Canacona and its people.
“Defections for the sake of development and for people are always welcome but defection for personal gains should not be encouraged,” he said.
