Returning Officers to file FIR against candidates for violation of norms

Hundreds of party workers noticed without masks, no social distancing

MARGAO: Despite strict instructions from the Election Commission due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, a massive crowd of supporters accompanied their candidates, who filed their nominations from their respective constituencies at the South Goa Collector’s office, on Thursday. However, taking serious note of the situation, the concerned Returning Officers said they are in the process of filing FIRs against the candidates for violating the norms.

Reportedly the Election Commission has already instructed the political parties and the candidates not to hold any rallies and against engaging in campaigning with more than five persons. These instructions were issued in wake of COVID pandemic.

Even, the police were helpless to control the massive rush of workers and supporters of the political parties at the venue.

Hundreds of party workers, who were seen outside the office of the Returning Officer, were later noticed moving with their candidates without masks and not maintaining social distancing.

Even, the police were helpless to control the massive rush of workers and supporters of the political parties at the venue.

Few workers of political parties, excluding the ruling BJP, accused the police of allowing the supporters of the ruling party and being harsh at the Opposition party workers.

“Yes, we have noticed many candidates with a huge number of workers and candidates at the time of filing the nomination papers near the venue. We have also video recorded the scenes and we are in the process of registering FIRs against them,” said Returning Officer Prasad Volvoikar.
