Savordem Panchayat comes under Valpoi constituency. The total population of the panchayat is 3024 which has no source income, therefore, totally depends on government grants to run its affairs.
The nine wards of the panchayat are Kudshe, Sonal, Karonzal, Savordem, Karmali, Kunthal, Shirsavarde, Kazaredhat and Bandir wada.
Water shortage is a major problem in panchayat area, where roads have no footpaths. Since the village is close to forest, farmers face destruction of their crops by wild animals. Almost 60 percent of literate youth are unemployed.
Despite the ruling panchas being loyalists of the BJP, the panchayat has not been getting grants regularly for the last five years.
“The government has built water projects in our panchayat area, but they are awaiting inauguration past four years,” says Anil Nene.
“We have met PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar and informed him of the pending inauguration of water projects. But he didn’t reply anything in return. So, we will meet him again and will request him to inaugurate our water projects,” said another Panch Baburao paryekar.
Savordem Panchayat is a home ‘Movacho Guno’ which is popular among domestic tourists. However, this place has also taken the lives of five persons who drowned there.
“We are trying our best to prevent drowning incidents at this place. We have already asked the Valpoi Police station to post its personnel here during tourist season. We have also informed Goa Tourism Department, that we need a life guard at Movacho Guno’ as it has become a famous tourists spot,” Sarpanch Ashok Gaonkar said.
