CHORAO: Two ferries on the Chorao-Ribandar route were non-operational from Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning due to lack of staff. Motorists from both sides had to wait in queue for a long time for other ferries.
As per information, the ferry services at the old Ribandar ramp was stopped from 2 pm on Monday to 11 am on Tuesday as the staff had taken leave for the ‘Tulsi Wedding’, which was celebrated by the Hindu community on Monday.
Chorao ex-Sarpanch Prasad Chodankar stated that he had made several calls to River Navigation Department official Vikramsing Bhosle, who informed that the staff was on leave. However, Chodankar claimed that the staff was present, except for the captain.
Tony Noronha, general secretary of United Citizens of Chorao, which is fighting for the immediate construction of a bridge at Chorao, said there were problems with the ferry services every day. He alleged that the RND was not serious about providing better service to the islanders and opined that only a bridge would solve their problems.
