PANJIM: Rich tributes were paid to Goa’s first Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar, on the occasion of his 110th birth anniversary, on Friday.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant paid floral tributes to Bandodkar at his Miramar Samadhi. He later garlanded Bandodkar’s statue near Old Secretariat, here and at New Secretariat, Porvorim.
Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat also paid floral tribute to Bandodkar at his Miramar Samadhi. He was accompanied by candidates backed by him for the Margao Municipal Council.
Kamat said that the Supreme Court judgement upholding the order of the High Court of Bombay at Goa on reservation of municipal wards has come on a right day on the occasion of Bandodkar’s birth anniversary and it has taught people true meaning of democracy.
Kamat said that Bandodkar espoused the cause of Bahujan Samaj and worked for weaker section of the society. MGP legislator Sudin Dhavalikar too visited Bandodkar’s Samadhi and paid rich tributes to him.
He also garlanded his statue. Sudin said that late Bandodkar worked for the welfare of Bahujan Samaj and opened primary schools across the State.
Earlier, Opposition Leader Kamat slammed the State government after he found the gates of Bandodkar Samadhi locked.
He then called the PWD Principal Chief Engineer and had to wait for more than half-an-hour till the gates were opened.
He alleged that arrogance of power has gone to the government’s head and hoped that better sense would prevail upon them.
