Rift over pao price hike simmers

PANJIM: The rift over the pao price hike continues to simmer, with the All Goa Bakers and Confectioners’ Association (AGBCA) strongly condemning the decision of the All Goa Association of Bakers (AGAB) to sell pao at the new rate of Rs five from November 1, in Salcete.

The AGBCA claimed that the AGAB’s move is against the decision of other bakers, across State who increased the price from this month.

AGBCA president Peter Fernandes accused the AGAB for spooling the pao rates for the past six years.

He said the AGAB’s decision is totally “unacceptable and mockery” with malafide intention.

“If the price hike is delayed when the public supports, it will be a disaster for bakers and never in future will there be any further rise, as non-Goans want more commissions and turnover,” he said in a press statement.

On Saturday, several bakers under the leadership of Fernandes, gathered behind the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) building and protested against the other group of bakers from Salcete for creating confusion amongst the consumers by suddenly reverting back to the old rate of pao.
