Rights organisations vow to get justice for torture victim

Women’s and children’s rights organizations have promised to take up the torture of the 12-year old minor girl by a Mumbai-based family, even as the Margao police has forwarded the case to their Mumbai counterparts for further investigations.
Bailancho Ekvott Convenor Auda Viegas said the brutal assault on the girl is unprecedented in nature. Viegas, who was called by the Margao police when at the girl reported the matter to the police station, said there are scars all over the body of the minor girl. “The family cannot be allowed to get away with the torture. Justice needs to be done to the young girl”, he said.
In this connection, Viegas disclosed plans to take up the matter with the Goa State Commission for Children, besides Non-Governmental Organisations in Mumbai to take the matter to its logical conclusion.
“The people who have unleashed the brutality on the young girl should not go unpunished. The NGOs and the commission working for the welfare of children will be involved to get justice for the young girl”, she asserted.
Referring to the contention of the family that the girl had met with an accident, Viegas sought to know if the girl had indeed met with an accident, why the family did not sent her back to Goa all this time.
Meanwhile, Margao PI Santosh Desai said the police late last night registered offenses under the Juvenile Justice Act, Goa Children’s Act and other provisions of the IPC and has referred the matter to the Superintendent of Police to forward the case to the Mumbai counterparts.
Commenting on the allegations made by the victim girl, PI Desai said the girl has been brutally tortured and was not given provided basic food by the Mumbai-based family.
“This is a clear case of torture and brutality”, he said, adding that it is for the Mumbai police to take the case to its logical conclusion.
As reported by this newspaper, 12-year-old Preethi had alleged that the Mumbai-based family which has offered to look after her education and well being nearly half a decade ago, tormented and tortured her in recent times. “The scars all over her body indicate the extent of brutality unleashed on the young girl,” PI Desai added.
