Rights panel takes cognisance of primary school near garbage treatment plant

Complainants allege primary section shifted to a new building near Penha-de-Franca waste plant; claim atmosphere polluted; violated human rights

PANJIM: The Goa Human Rights Commission(GHRC) has asked the Director of Education and the management of a primary school at Porvorim to remain present before it on August 7 for hearing in connection with shifting of the school premises near a waste treatment plant. 

Notices have been issued in this regards to Director of Education and Chairman of Prabodhini Education Society, Porvorim. 

Pushpa Naik and others, all parents had in their complaint made on July 23, appealed to the GHRC to initiate action in the matter. They had alleged that shifting of classes of the primary section to a new building near the Penha-de-Franca garbage plant, in polluted atmosphere was violation of human rights.  

The Commission has also notified one of the complainants Rajesh Dabholkar.  

The parents have pointed out that the National Green Tribunal in one of the cases had passed an order stating that garbage treatment plant cannot be located near the school. They have further stated that the school management shifted the classes from kindergarten to class IV to new premises without obtaining prior permission from the Directorate of Education.
