VASCO: There has been an inexplicable rise in dengue cases in the port town which has baffled health officials and the Mormugao Municipal Council has appealed to citizens to keep their homes and surroundings clean so as to combat the menace.
The number of such vector-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya and malaria usually increases in June and July with the onset of the monsoon
Urban Health Centre, Vasco in-charge Dr Paresh Lawande said that though malaria is not prevalent in the port town, dengue cases are being reported due to stagnation of water caused due to the incessant rainfall which the state witnessed latterly.
“Due to irregular water supply, citizens have been storing water in barrels and buckets which was leading to breeding of mosquitoes. The people must take adequate precautions and not allow water to stagnate for more than a week,” Dr Lawande said.
Stating that some people visit private pathology laboratories for blood tests, Dr Lawande said that the staff from the Urban Health Centre have been visiting these private labs to collect the data about dengue cases.
Dr Lawande said that the Urban Health Centre has been receiving cases of NS 1, though not confirmed but there are cases of suspected dengue.
