MARGAO: In yet another incident the substandard works executed by the contractors of the sewerage department has been exposed at Colmorod, Margao as well, as a portion of the road from Sitara Motors to ESI Hospital sank on Wednesday.
It must be noted that earlier the Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) had complained about the substandard works executed by the contractors engaged by the sewerage department to connect the houses/buildings to the sewerage lines.
A few days back, a similar incident had been reported at National Highway at Old Market and Ring Road, Margao. Upon which the Public Works Department had ordered to replace the whole line of sewage at Old Market area.
In the written complaint to the Assistant Engineer, the SCM it was brought to the notice that the contractor had used hammer drills to puncture the manhole chambers instead of using core-cutting machines. In doing so huge holes were punctured in the manhole chamber walls, which were subsequently closed by using low-grade loose concrete, which was not cured with water either.
SCM Convener Savio Coutinho explained that on account of the ruthless puncturing of the chambers using hammer drills and subsequently using loose low-grade concrete (without subsequent curing), voids remain, through which silt enter into the Manholes and the network lines.
“It is, for this reason, we find a portion of road surfaces sinking suddenly, as the mud below the asphalt enters into the Manholes leaving huge voids, and eventually the road surface collapses”, he alleged.
