PANJIM: Petrol and diesel prices were hiked yet again on Monday, this time going up by 40 paise per litre taking the increase to Rs 8.40 a litre in the past two weeks.
This is the 12th increase in rates of fuel since March 22, when the price revision began and rates started to increase. The price of petrol has since crossed the Rs 100 mark.
Chandresh Morajkar of Panjim said that the government is not to be entirely blamed for the hike. “Since petrol has to be imported from outside and there are no reservoirs in India the government can’t really control the hike in price of the fuel. The government should at least try to control the rise if it is not possible for them to halt it completely.” He suggested that the value added tax (VAT) could be reduced to bring down the price.
Speaking in agreement Rajaram Divakar from Panjim said that the rise in the price of fuel is an effect of the Ukraine-Russia war and government in power is not really the one to be held responsible for it.
He added that controlling the hike in fuel prices is beyond the scope of the government since petrol and diesel isn’t found in India and that the consumers should now shift to electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles to cope up with the increasing rates of fuel.
