Roads in many parts of Goa still dug up

Vehicles plying through mud-filled craters likely to become vulnerable for accidents

PANJIM: Roads in many parts of Goa are still unlevelled though digging should have ended by May 15. The sewerage pipeline works in Panjim, and the gas pipeline work in Vasco town is still on when the monsoon is at the doorsteps.

The normal date for the progress of the monsoon over Goa is June 5. However, IMD had forecasted that the monsoon may hit Goa early.

It may be noted that the early arrival of the monsoon will have a severe impact on vehicular movement through the dug roads.

Most of the roads have not been tarred in Panjim. IndianOil-Adani Gas Pvt. Ltd. has just covered the dug roads with mud in the Fontainhas area. If it rains heavily patches of the road are likely to sink and create craters.

Former Mayor of Panjim, Uday Madkaikar said, “Monsoon can start at any point of time in Goa. Digging roads at this juncture will be disastrous for vehicles as well as pedestrians. During my tenure as a Mayor, we used to refuse permission to those departments demanding to dig of the road unless the work to be carried out was of the utmost importance”.
