‘Role of Water Management Authority important’

WRD Minister said that the Tribunal has given detailed instructions for creation of a Mhadei Water Management Authority (MWMA)
“Only Goa had submitted evidence on the issue and had put up as witness a person having expertise in working of inter-state boards. Neither Karnataka nor Maharashtra offered any views on this topic, for which the tribunal has expressed severe displeasure,” he said.
He further said that the tribunal has further ordered that projects in Karnataka and in Maharashtra will be owned and operated, not by the concerned States, as was the practice so far, but by the MWMA.
“This gives MWMA ‘teeth’ and the upstream states will not be able to play any mischief and deny water to the downstream State,” he said.
In all other States, he added, the authority just gives directions, but it is the States which take the final decision.
