MARGAO: Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) along with consumer welfare clubs organised a round table discussion on ‘Youth and Road Safety’ at Kare College of Law on Tuesday. Discussions were held about the guidelines that need to be followed for a State without road accidental deaths.
The 2nd World Youth Assembly for Road Safety will take place on February 18, as an official pre-event of the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety.The 31st National Road Safety Week 2020 was observed recently with the theme ‘Bringing Change Through Youth Power’.
“With 356 million young people in the country, India has one of the youngest populations in an aging world. Unfortunately, we are unable to utilize the demographic dividend to its full potential as we are losing our manpower to hapless road accidents. As per the WHO, road accidents are recognized as the leading cause of deaths among the youthbetween the ages of 5-29 in India and worldwide in India and worldwide,” said GOACAN.
The rising number of deaths of students and youth due to road accidents in Goa is a cause for concern and GOACAN gave a call to all Consumer Welfare Clubs in High Schools, HSS’s and Colleges to get involved in issues of road safety and traffic management and kick start their activities for year 2020 during this National Road Safety Week.
Plans for observation of the State and National Road Safety Weeks, plan for the observation of the World Day of Remembrance for road traffic victims were amongst the many issues discussed.
