Rs 40 cr funding for underground cabling in each constituency: Minister

PORVORIM: Power Minister Ramakrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar revealed on Tuesday that the Goa government is set to undertake underground cabling works at a cost of Rs 40 crore in every constituency.

In response to a starred query raised by Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa concerning the issue of frequent power failures in his constituency, Dhavalikar stated that the power infrastructure works worth Rs 150 crore have already been initiated in Quepem.

“The Electricity Department has embarked on a project to replace old electricity conductors throughout the State, a task that has not been carried out in most parts of Goa since 1965. This measure aims to curb power outages and enhance power supply reliability,” he said.

Providing further details, the Minister outlined plans for laying underground cables to improve power quality in the Quepem constituency and disclosed the upcoming tendering process for the project.

However, D’Costa expressed dissatisfaction with the Minister’s response, labelling it as ‘misleading’. He cited that as many as 323 power outages were reported in various parts of his constituency, implying that there was a power failure every second day.
