Ponda The Dhavali scrapyard which went up in smoke last week has its losses estimated to around Rs 5-6 cr
The entire scrapyard was gutted however the exact reason behind the fire is still unclear and the Ponda Fire services has written to the police to investigate the matter thoroughly.
The major fire broke out last Friday afternoon and fire brigades from all over the State were directed towards the site to douse the flame and the operation continued till Sunday morning.
Around 25-30 labourers work at this scrapyard were on a lunchbreak when the fire broke out.
Locals said that the Kavlem panchayat and the scrapyard owner were locked in a legal battle for years and the owners had managed to get a stay against eviction and the next hearing was scheduled for May 12.
“The reason behind the fire is not clear yet and we have written to the Ponda police to conduct a thorough probe into the matterr,” said fire station’s officer Sushil Morajkar.
