BICHOLIM: Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds damaged property estimated at Rs 8 lakh and disrupted services in Bicholim taluka as well as in Chorao on Monday night,
Heavy rains struck the taluka at about 11 pm and trees got uprooted and fell on electricity wires, snapping off power supply at many places.
The Bicholim fire services received 17 calls, of which most of them pertained to trees falling on houses, compound walls or roads.
Seven houses were damaged at Chorao, while one house was damaged at Mayem. A tree also damaged a car at Chorao.
Uprooting of trees was also reported at Nanoda, Latambarcem, Bordem, Surla and other parts of Bicholim taluka.
Teams from the fire services at Bicholim and Valpoi were pressed into service to clear the uprooted trees and other debris, with operations going on till Tuesday evening.Power supply which was disrupted the entire night was restored only on Tuesday afternoon.
