MARGAO:  The raids by the Margao Road Transport Office’s Enforcement Division  on several fish vendors in Margao for conducting business on private two-wheelers have drawn flak from residents.
Terming this a retrograde step, the consumers, who purchase fish from such vendors daily, have called upon the authorities to find a solution and not to create more problems.
The Road Transport Office on Monday had issued challans to fish vendors at wholesale fish markets Madel, Fatorda and also at Davorlim. They were booked for violating Motor Vehicle Act regulations for using two-wheelers to sell fish.
Several Margao residents had to go without fish on account of the raids.
Rama Mandrekar, a Davorlim resident said, “The raids on these fishermen should have been conducted after warning them regarding the violation”.  He said such raids will only create artificial inflation of the prices of fish and further burden the consumers.
Sahil Borkar, a Housing Board resident said, “If the sale of fish on private vehicles is not allowed then the persons need to be communicated. Get them registered and have separate licences for such sellers.”
The complainant in this case had informed that there are around 200 such vehicles involved in sale of fish in the market.
Caje Fernandes, a businessman from Margao said, “There is already a lot of hue and cry on unemployment. Selling fish is a traditional occupation. In fact the place where non-Goans are involved in the sale of fish in Goa should be replaced by Goan youth”.
On Monday at least 20 challans were issued to such vendors at the fish market.
