Superintendent of Police Kartik Kashyap said the file is presently with the Prosecution department. “We have sent a draft copy (of the chargesheet) to the prosecution department for legal opinion. If there are no changes, the case will be chargesheeted mid-next week,” he told Herald.
The voluminous chargesheet against 11 accused, including eight government officials, comprises 2,600 pages and includes forensic reports and statements of 125-odd witnesses. While nine of the accused were arrested during the course of the investigation, two builders – former directors of Bharat Developers and Realtors Pvt Ltd Pradip Singh Birring and Jagdeep Kumar Seghal – are still at large.
The Crime Branch chargesheet before Margao Sessions Court is also expected to expedite absconding British passport holder Birring’s extradition to India, who has been traced to Manchester.
The accused are facing serious criminal and corruption charges after an under construction building at Chawdi, Canacona crashed killing 31 labourers on January 4, 2014.
The builders are also booked under section 174-A of the Indian Penal Code for dishonouring the court by refusing to respond to repeated summons.
