MARGAO: TMC National Vice-President Luizinho Faleiro on Wednesday said the recent clashes between two groups is an eye opener for all especially ahead of elections, and hence all should take precautions that such incidents are nipped in the bud.
In the letter to the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, he also urged the Police Department to maintain law and order at any cost, and to issue a message to all concerned authorities to prevent any such attempt to disturb the peace and take strict and immediate action against the perpetrators of this culture of intolerance.
“Goa is known for its communal harmony and as an abode of peace and tranquillity. People of all communities have been residing at Bhagwati Chawl, Davorlim and at Rumdamol Housing Board for generations supporting each other and maintaining mutual respect towards each other’s families and traditions,” Faleiro said.
Faleiro condemned those with an intention to disturb the peace and encourage a communal flare up at a time when emotional sensitivity on religious grounds is high.
“Even though I was following up the unsavoury incident, I avoided going there personally as it would have lent a political colour to it. It has always been my sincere effort, almost akin to worship, to maintain communal harmony in Goa, which is our inheritance and legacy,” he said.
According to him, some outsiders not only caused the incident demonstrating intolerance but also brought more people from even outside the State to create a scene.
“The timely police intervention saved the State from something, which could have been a major embarrassment to the government and Goans. We have reputation as a tranquil State with a friendly feeling towards every human being. In Goa, we never even ask the religious denomination of any individual far from showing intolerance,” Faleiro added.
