Rumdamol clashes: District admin monitoring situation

MARGAO: The ongoing clash between the two groups of two separate religious communities in Rumdamol Housing Board is a major cause for concern ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections with the residents demanding that the district administration should maintain a strict vigil on these groups and sort out the issue at the earliest.

However, the district administration has warned that no one will be allowed to take law into their hands.

Speaking to Herald, South Additional Collector Surendra Naik said, “The administration is closely monitoring the situation and meeting with both the groups of religious communities will be called if necessary.”

For long, a tense situation has prevailed between the two groups in the communal-sensitive area. But till date no intervention from the District Administration or from the police has been reported, as a result of which one of the groups managed to organise another gathering and rally, on Sunday.

It may be recalled that following the issue of flags put up by another group on Eid, the other community group from the locality had opposed by alleging that the flags had been displayed near the temple. Thereafter, the members of both the groups were injured in a clash that erupted between the two groups. One of the groups held rallies against the incident including the rally which was organised at Margao, on Sunday.

When contacted Additional Collector Naik said that the district administration is closely monitoring the situation and meetings between both the groups will be called if required.

“The district administration will not allow anyone to take the law into their hands,” he warned.

He admitted that the situation may lead to major tension in the coming days in view of the upcoming Assembly elections.

One group led by Jayesh Naik had strongly objected to alleged pro-Pakistan slogans. They have demanded strict action against those involved in chanting pro-Pakistan slogans.

However, at the moment, the residents opine that the police and district administration need to take strong measures to resolve the issue before it leads to major riots.
