MARGAO: The South Goa District fortnightly meeting of the Solid Waste Management reviewed the status of garbage disposal sites, on Thursday.
Additional Collector Surendra Naik, who chaired the meet, informed that the municipalities of South Goa have complied and 90 per cent of the villages have finalised their sites.
The Margao Municipal Council has been struggling to have a site to dump the reject derive that is being generated from the remediation. The MMC official informed that the council has sought clearance from the Forest Department for a site which they intend to use for storage of refuse derived fuel (RDF).
He also said that they will attempt to get the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) land near the railway station.
The Additional Collector informed that after the land is identified it is sent to the Goa State Pollution Control Board for clearance. There is a mandate to have separate dry and wet waste sites and further added that they have to be authorised for the handling of wet waste.
He said that 90 per cent of the villages have identified the sites. All the municipalities have complied.
The compliance report of the Local Self Governments and the fortnightly meeting is sent to the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
