‘Saand Ki Aankh’ to open IFFI on Jan 16

NEW DELHI: Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday announced the selection of 23 Feature and 20 non-Feature films in the Indian Panorama for the 51st International Film Festival of India, IFFI, to be held in the State from January 16 to 24.

A total of 23 Indian Feature films were selected from among 183 by a 12-member jury headed by acclaimed filmmaker, screenwriter and producer John Mathew Matthan.

Three Hindi films are among those selected. Besides, Saand ki Aankh directed by Tushar Hiranandani, the other two are Chhichhore directed by Nitesh Tiwary and Aavartan of Durba Sahay. The selection includes five Malayalam movies and three Marathi movies.

The Marathi movies namely are June, Prawaas and Karkanisanchi Waari. Assamese movie Bridge, directed by Kripal Kalita, topped the list, which also include Govind Nihalani directed Up, Up And Up. Two Bengali and two Tamil movies were selected while one movie each are in Sanskrit (Namo by Ganesh Vinayakan), Telugu, Chhattisgarhi (A Dog And His Man), Kannada, Manipuri, and Oriya.

In the Feature films section, 23 films are selected that include Kripal Kalita directed Assamese movie Bridge, Hindi Films Saand Ki Aankh and Chhichhore, Govid Nihlani’s English movie Up Up And Up, Nila Madhab Panda’s Odia movie Kalira Atita, Marathi movie Prawaas, Sanskrit movie Namo and Malayalam movie safe directed by Praddep Kailipurayath.

The Indian Panorama of the film festival also has a contemporary package of socially and aesthetically vibrant Non-Feature films, selected by an eminent jury headed by acclaimed Feature and Documentary filmmaker Haobam Paban Kumar, out of a diverse pool of 143 contemporary Non-Feature films.

Twenty Non-Feature films making the grade include six in English, six in Hindi, three in Marathi and one each in Nepali, Manipuri, Pahari, Bengali, Malayalam and Gujarati. They include Ankit Kothari’s Gujarati movie Panchika,  Bimal Poddar’s Bengali movie Radha, English movie Ahimsa-Gandhi : The Power of Powerless directed by Ramesh Sharma and Manipuri movie Highways of Life directed by Maibam Amarjeet Singh.
